We celebrate Wellness Week and the 120th anniversary of PAHO by planting 120 trees in a symbolic park – PAHO/WHO

Tegucigalpa, September 23 (PAHO/WHO). With the aim of promoting healthy lifestyles for the benefit of people and communities, PAHO/WHO, the Ministry of Health, the United Nations System and other invited organizations, marked the Week of Wellness 2022 in the Parque del Cerro Juana Laínez in the capital.

On the other hand, to mark PAHO’s 120th anniversary, various activities were carried out, including a walk along the park’s paths and the planting of 120 trees as the Organization’s commitment to environmental protection to mitigate the impact of climate change. Later, a Zumba day was held to promote physical activity among all participants, as well as recreation, in addition, comprehensive health services were provided for employees of the Ministry of Health, employees of UNS agencies, PAHO and their families. , thanks to the support of brigades from the Metropolitan Health Region Central District.

Also, the space was used for a cultural act for which the musical group Rondalla was in charge: “Cuerdas y Voces del Corazón”, made up mainly of elderly pensioners who, through their artistic skills, sang the song Color Esperanza, in allusion to the anniversary of PAHO. Parallel events were chaired by PAHO/WHO representative, Piedad Huerta Arneros, as well as Dr. Nerza Gloria Paz, Deputy Minister for Integrated Health Service Networks, La Licda. Silvia Sosa, Councilor of the Office of the Municipal Mayor of Tegucigalpa and Alice Shackelford, Permanent Coordinator of SNU.

Alice Shackelford congratulated PAHO/WHO staff, urging them to take care of their own health and mentioning the importance of health in achieving the other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Deputy Minister Paz mentioned that PAHO/WHO has always been an important ally in achieving a healthier Honduras, saving many health achievements over the years.

Piedad Huerta mentioned that “with the support of the Metropolitan Health Region of the Central District and the health staff of the Comprehensive Health Center of Chile, we are carrying out this event so that the staff of the United Nations together with other sectors, family members and partners of PAHO make room in our agendas and carry out together activities in favor of our health and well-being On this day we also celebrate, together with the United Nations family, the 120th anniversary of the creation of the Pan American Health Organization and will hold a symbolic planting event of 120 trees in this park, as a sign of our commitment to health and the environment for Honduras, where students of social and educational work to offer their contribution in caring for them. Finally, I want to reiterate our commitment to continue working on promoting strategies in favor of equality for universal access and coverage of health services, in order to face current and future public health challenges. During the week, other activities, including health fairs, were held in the cities of La Ceiba and Santa Rosa de Copán, to promote vaccination against COVID-19 and sustainable and other health services offered in health facilities. Health.
