Washington (CNN) — Paul Pelosi, the wife of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was attacked with a hammer by a man who entered the couple’s home in San Francisco early this morning, police sources told CNN.
Pelosi (82) is expected to make a full recovery, the Democratic congresswoman’s office said in a statement.
Drew Hammill, spokesman for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, noted that “the attacker is in custody, and the motives for the attack are being investigated.”
“Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The president was not in San Francisco at the time,” added the spokesman, who explained that the Democratic leader was in Washington.

For its part, the Capitol Police said in a statement that it is participating in a joint investigation with the FBI and the San Francisco Police Department to clarify the attack.
He gave more details about the reaction of the police. According to the statement, Capitol Police Special Agents in the California Field Office “quickly arrived on the scene, while a team of investigators from the Department’s Threat Assessment Division was simultaneously dispatched from the East Coast to assist the FBI and San Francisco police in their joint investigation.
“The Speaker of the House of Representatives and her family are grateful to the emergency services and medical professionals and request privacy at this time,” spokesman Hammill added in his statement.
The attacker entered Pelosi’s residence from the back of the house, according to two sources with early details of the incident.
Because the Democratic leader was not there, security guards were not at the residence, according to a source familiar with the protocol.
There may be video that Capitol Police and security forces can review, since there are security cameras in the home, according to two law enforcement sources.
The Pelosi’s have been married since 1963 and have five children.
