Elon Musk will start laying off Twitter employees this Friday

(CNN) –– Elon Musk will begin announcing layoffs at Twitter this Friday, according to a memo sent to his staff. In an email sent out Thursday night, employees said they would receive notification of their employment status before 12:00 p.m. Miami time.

“If your employment is not affected, you will be notified via your Twitter email,” reads a copy of the email obtained by CNN. “If this affects your employment, you will receive a notification with next steps via your personal email.”

The email added that “to ensure the security” of Twitter’s employees and systems, the company’s offices “will be temporarily closed and access to all credentials will be suspended.” The email concluded by acknowledging that it will be an “incredibly challenging experience” for the workforce.

The memo followed news reports that Musk planned to lay off up to half of the company’s staff after buying it for $44 billion last week.

Musk began his tenure at Twitter by firing CEO Parag Agrawal and two other executives, according to two people familiar with the decision.

And in less than a week since he bought the company, top executives appear to have all but disappeared, amid a mix of layoffs and resignations. Musk also disbanded Twitter’s old board of directors.

CNN’s Clare Duffy contributed to this report.
