Diabetes is a disease associated with high blood sugar levels because the body does not produce insulin, which is produced by the pancreas to create energy in the body. In fact, there is talk of a close relationship between diabetes and obesity in Puerto Rico.
Some experts have confirmed that the most common types of diabetes in Puerto Rico are: type 1, which is more related to young people, and type 2 for adults.
treatment of diabetes
Earlier in medicine, there was only insulin for the treatment of diabetes, regardless of the variety of its manifestations. Fortunately, advances in science have made it possible to create countless treatment options, some of which are oral. However, access to them and their use depend on each individual case. For example, for patients with Type 1 diabetesinsulin will continue to be the first treatment option.
There is research into very innovative products that serve several mechanisms. One of them is called Sotagliflozin, a drug that helps treat diabetes, hypertension and contributes to weight loss.
In addition, “there are sodium and glucose inhibitors. These are drugs that are completely independent of insulin, regardless of whether the patient produces this substance or not. The mentioned drugs have benefits for glycemic control and also for reducing the incidence or mortality of cardiovascular diseases ,” said Dr. José García Mateo, a Puerto Rican endocrinologist.
Combination with insulin
All the mentioned treatments are combined with insulin. So far, the scientific community has not found a drug that can replace insulin in the human body.
As a result of this uncontrolled disease, patients can develop blindness, cardiovascular events, cognitive conditions, hyperglycemia, amputations, strokes, kidney failure, among others.
